Discovering a Newbury Park Martial Arts School
Selecting a martial arts school can be easy if you follow a few simple steps:
- 1. Check the internet and note schools in your town- is the web site current and up beat? Is the web site pleasing to the eye and informative? This may be an indication of future instruction.
- 2. Phone the schools and ask whether they’re affiliated with a larger organization, such as the Quest Center Organization under Stephen K. Hayes. If not, standards and methods for advancement may be inconsistent.
- 3. Determine your martial arts goals. Are you interested in self-defense? Do you want to become a black belt? Do you want character education, meditation and a positive children’s program?
- 4. Stop by several training halls to watch classes. Many schools have an observation area, so you can watch during class. Ask permission first. Note the size of the school- you must have enough room to train safely. Many strip mall schools are simply too small.
- 5. Ask for permission to talk with students and instructors. Find out how students’ experiences have been with the dojo and whether the instructors’ styles will support your goals.
- 6. Assess the quality of teaching. What is your impression of the instructors? Were you greeted at the door my friendly staff? Do instructors expect and show respect and courtesy? What is their experience?
- 7. Does the dojo have a trial membership you may purchase? The best way to investigate a dojo is to try the experience
- 8. Check Google, Yelp, etc. for reviews. This may be an indicator you should try a trial membership with confidence.
