It is very important to explore the deeper meanings woven through your training curriculum and mind science, and how they currently influence your life.

(Excerpt from the 12 Life Skills article)

Where?s the Beef? 12 Life Skills for Children

I am looking for a program to give my children life-long confidence. I want them to be self-reliant, caring, respectful and fun-loving. Basically, I am looking for To-Shin Do (Ninja self-defense) and the accompanying 12 Life Skills for Children.

My children do not live in 1400′s Japan. There is no threat of Samurai taking my children from their families or of them being put into slavery. Yet, the threats that my children face daily are as real as a sword-wielding Samurai bent on enforcing his rules. My children face on an everyday basis the unfortunate society rules of accepting mediocrity. They will have to battle against class mates and co-workers bent on thriving on ego and tearing others down, instead of supporting each other and building each other up. They will face in their life individuals that will try to buy them off with money or affection, instead of valuing the beautiful souls that they are.

And, don’t be fooled; these actions begin in kindergarten.

I am not a pessimist. I simply am seeing the state of our society today, and want to provide my children with a support system outside of our home that allows them to live full, productive, fulfilled lives.

This is where the To-Shin Do C.O.O.L. Kidz program steps up to bat (C.O.O.L. is “confident, on-purpose, on-target leadership”). Heck, even the name is cool! This really must be what I am looking for.

Imagine how your children’s lives would be improved with knowledge of the following 12 skills:

* Kicking- Not only developing your large muscle groups to support you in sports and on the playground, but learning how to use low kicks (some where a child can reach on a larger person) to defend themselves.

In addition, the kids practice “kicking” bad habits out of their life.

* Teamwork- a much used word for a reason. Kids need to be able to work with fellow team mates, whether in the class room or eventually in the boardroom. Effective teamwork is a top skill of powerful leaders.

* Spirit- paying attention to ones feelings and intuition is a skill we are born with, but forget to exercise. Youth of today need to be able to pay attention to applying the right attitude in the right situation.

This is a partial list of the 12 skills our children focus on in To-Shin Do. There is so much more, but simply employing these named skills will breed strong, healthy, confident kids.

Dalai Lama: What do I really fear? Being eaten by sharks- important article from the Dalai Lama

In this UK Telegraph interview, the Dalai Lama discusses his daily schedule and his hopes for the future.

With so much at stake for this world leader, it is refreshing to see his jovial humor and the light of joy in his eyes. As peaceful warriors training in To-Shin Do, we hope that the Dalai Lama’s inspiration to serve humanity is a guiding force to anchor us to our deepest level training.

Every day we bow on the mat, we make a new promise to live by our student creed and code of ethics.

He (Dalai Lama) believes his popularity worldwide is due to his focus on common human desires for happiness and contentment. “Human beings – we are all physically, emotionally, the same. And importantly, everybody wants a happy life. We need money, it’s useful, but if we put all our hopes on these things, it’s wrong. We must look at our inner values, that’s the main thing to bring inner strength, self-confidence and inner peace. The ultimate source of happiness is within ourselves.”

The greatest single thing in life, he says, is the intelligence of human beings. “With the help of human intelligence, we have the ability to develop infinite love and infinite compassion.”

It is what drives his dedication to others, and inspires his favourite prayer from an eighth‑century Indian Buddhist master. “So long as space remains and suffering of sentient beings is there, I will remain to serve,” he recites. “That prayer really gives me inner strength.”

Behind our day-to-day thoughts is a powerful tool, called our sub-conscious that is programmed by repeated input. In other words, what you think of, say and do on a daily conscious basis is what it takes in and builds itself around. So, if you consistently work on a positive and healthy thinking, your life will follow the enlightened path you have created.

Look hard at your life and find the times that your subconscious has controlled you both positively and negatively. See if you can identify what was the underlying thought that created the sub-conscious habit.

As protectors it is our responsibility to strive to be as powerful as we can become. Create and direct an inner vision of only that you wish to experience.

Everyone gets into habits now and then that can be called “ruts”- same place, same thing- and the feeling of stagnation. To-Shin Do Ninja Martial Arts has age old advice that will help the modern individual better manage stress and move forward to create new possibilities.

Recognize: be honest with yourself; are you in a rut? Do you have a nagging internal voice that you would like to be better, have more, act with more integrity, and be more aware? Recognizing this inner voice is the first step in the rut breaker. Once this voice has been recognized, you will consciously have a new choice to make- which gives you power.

What steps can you do today to make a new pattern? Make time to read a good book, carve out 5 minutes to sit in quiet meditation and just breathe, take the time to treat yourself to 20 minutes of fitness. The action step doesn’t need to be big, just consistent. Journaling your new habit and the positive affects you felt while doing your new habit will help solidify the process.

Be aware of the words you use. Words have power; are you sarcastic? Do you complain to get attention? Do you say you don’t have enough of … Change your speaking pattern and change your outcome

Meaning behind your movements. For each action, be aware that your intention matches your action. When you say thank you, really mean it. When you give a compliment, do so from the heart in an authentic way. People are more in tune to intention that most would realize so project clear positive intention.

A personal guide or mentor can readily help you get out of your rut and into new and productive habits to generate a full and meaningful life. To-Shin Do Martial Art is the perfect vehicle to help you establish a new routine. Having a good teacher is key- and make sure that the teacher has habits that are congruent to a positive, brilliant life as well.

With dedication and a new energy to fill the void, you, too, can establish productive habits.

                       Mastering Your Mind

In April we explored stepping into wisdom by learning to teach others using gentle guidance and respect. This month, we enjoy discovering a path that will help us experience the clarity of wisdom. Your subconscious mind is a hard drive of memories and ideas about who you are. With what kind of input are you programming your hard drive? Do you reinforce positive affirmations, or do you dwell on fears and worries? As a warrior protector, make a pledge to be a powerful, responsible, positive person. Be in charge programming your hard drive, and the results will be a bountiful output.

Mastering your subconscious mind takes practice. With the many distractions in today’s society, it behooves all to carve out time to simply practice paying attention. Slow down, pay attention to your breath; pay attention to your posture; pay attention to your thoughts.

Your task this month is to develop the self-determination to not only make a pledge to experience the positive, but actively program your subconscious with proper thought and proper intention. Give thought and feedback on the following concept:

“If I could receive any award in the world, I would want as my prize ________”.

Go ahead- state your intention. Match it with vision. Share what happens!

To-Shin!!

To-Shin Do really is for families; families that want to grow in their personal knowledge of the best self-defense– families that want to participate in a values driven adventure– families that like being in a positive atmosphere where we don’t compete with each other, but build each other up.

Thank you, to all our families (and we welcome the new families yet to come)!

Enjoy this feedback from one of our new dojo members. We are honored to have loving members at the dojo and thank the families that support our teaching! A lesson in bully avoidance and being a peaceful warrior:

Two weeks ago, I enrolled Nicholas and Nathan in a martial arts class that I think is amazing. Knowing how to respond to bullies is part of the learning curriculum. So far, in EVERY class, the boys have had to practice what they would do if someone bullied them. What I love, is that the teachers absolutely do not want them to engage in a fight. The emphasis is using words. The teachers will pretend to be the bullies in the class, and the kids are taught to put their hands up as a shield and yell with a strong voice, “STOP IT! BACK OFF!” once they feel threatened. But, they are taught ways to break out if someone grabs their shirt, etc. And, when they do use self-defense to break out, the teachers remind them, “Back away from the trouble!” Last week, half the class had to be “bullies”, and the other half huddled with the teacher to be “prepped.” The “bullies” walked up to their partner and said something not nice, and the other kids were prepared to say something. Everyone ended up laughing.

I truly feel lucky to have found this program. They even had a game where they had to learn to introduce themselves to someone new. Is it a martial arts class, or a social skills class? I feel like it’s both. Not only are they learning self-defense, but they are having so much fun in the class and making new friends. What really put this program over the top for me, was their student creed, which they recite as a class, like the Pledge of Allegiance.

“I believe in myself. I am confident. I can accomplish my goals. I believe in what I study. I am disciplined. I am ready to learn and advance. I believe in my teachers. I show respect to all who help me progress.”

I could go on and on about why I love this program. But, here is the website for you to check out. The place is called Newbury Park Martial Arts Center (it’s near Amgen). Be sure to check out the Student Creed, and the 14 point Code for Powerful Living.

Praise- Correct-Praise—the key to helping others on their knowledge quest.Everyone loves to be respected, and seeking knowledge certainly is more fun when we are getting powerful, positive feedback.
At work or school this week, practice the “PCP” technique. Before giving a critique, compliment the person. Be real, don’t make up things that are not true. Then proceed with your correction. Finally, remember to reinforce with another praise.
Let us know how this helps you apply your To-Shin Do knowledge at home or school!
